State Rep. Sean Garballey, Democrat of Arlington, has received an environmental award from SEBANE, the Solar Energy Business Association of New England.

The “Solar Champion of the Year - State Level” Award was presented to Garballey and Rep. Marjorie Decker, Democrat of Cambridge, to advance solar energy throughout the Commonwealth.

“It is an incredible honor to be given this award,” he said in an Oct. 21 news release. “Massachusetts must lead the country in advancing the solar industry. I am proud to be working on passing comprehensive and forward-thinking climate legislation.”

The release said that Garballey has continually addressed the need for alternative sources of energy, through filed legislation. Chief among these bills is H.3288, An Act transitioning Massachusetts to clean electricity, heating and transportation, filed with Decker, chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health. This ambitious legislation sets targets for renewable energy growth in all major sectors of the economy, and issues regulations to ensure that Massachusetts stays on track toward 100-percent clean electricity by 2035, as well as 100-percent clean heating and transportation by 2045.

Garballey is also a co-sponsor of a myriad number of bills dealing with the full spectrum of climate related issues.

He is also focuses on environmental-justice issues, ensuring minority voices are brought to the table to address climate-related issues affecting low-income communities and persons of color
