Arlington International Film Festival in 2020: All online
RECOMMENDED: Don't miss "Pilatus" and "Anton."
This year's films celebrate the art of music and dance featuring creative artists: Finnish choreographer and dancer Tero Saarinen; Brazilian composer/singer Dorival Caymmi, who revolutionized the music that led to the Bossa Nova and the Portuguese singers in Lisbon who express life through the art form of the Fado.
Ecological topics affecting our planet such ,as wildfires and the exhaustion of natural resources, are documented in the films "Leben mit dem Feuer" (The Village & the Wildfire) and "Sockeye Salmon" (Red Fish).
Dynamics of aging are addressed creatively in the Hungarian narratives "Pilatus" and "Elders," a short.
The festival has several films from around the world that have LGBTQ themes -- "La Rafaga" (The Gust). Filmed in Puerto Rico, it is not only cinematically beautiful but emotionally astute and touching.
Political topics include "Comrad Dov," a portrait of an Israeli member of the Knesset determined not to be derailed from following his conscious, and "It Grande Presidente" (The Great President), an aspiration for lawmakers coupled with an Italian short narrative satire.
Numerous social-justice issues are addressed in this year's festival, ranging from veterans with PTSD in "Mustang Saviors," the American-Indian adoption era in "Blood Memory," Chinese labor camps in "Finding Courage," to the holocaust in "An Inconvenient Time" and "The Mirror."
Immigration is an issue for countries around the world, and this year's winner of Best Documentary Feature is "Omar and Us" by Turkish directors Maryna Er Gorbach and Mehmet Bahadir Er.
In addition, two animation programs, a multitude of shorts programs and the Student Film Program demonstrate the creative ingenuity of 21st-century indie filmmakers.
