Arlington alerts switch to system that state uses

UPDATED Jan. 12: The Town of Arlington is moving over to Everbridge mass notification to power public alerts to residents.

The town sends alerts via phone, text and email about emergency and important community alerts, such as townwide snow emergencies/parking bans or targeted alerts, such as trash-route delays. 

“The Everbridge system was appealing to the town due to its reputation, ease of use and the expanded feature set,” said Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine in a Jan. 11 news release. “We’re also pleased that we were able to net some savings for taxpayers through the state’s contract.” 

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts uses Everbridge for their emergency communications and has done so extensively through the pandemic. Through the contract with the state, Everbridge offered reduced pricing for Arlington, which will save the town about $5,000 over the three-year contract.  

Portal offers profile creation

In response to YourArlington queries about Everbridge contract costs and privacy, Chapdelaine wrote Jan. 12 that the total cost, including a one-time set up fee of $959, is $36,948.67.

As to whether residents' profiles are shared with marketer he referred to the member FAQ, which says: "Will my contact information be shared with others?

"No. The information that you provide will be used only by the Town of Arlington for notification purposes. We will not give or sell your contact or location information to any vendor or other organization."

Among the expanded features is an easy-to-use portal for residents to create custom profiles and translation features, which the town will develop in the future as part of its equity plan.  

“Arlington alerts are an important method for us to reach the public during critical incidents,” said Julie Flaherty, Arlington’s police chief, in the release. “I hope everyone takes a moment this week to make sure they are in the new system. Help us get the word out. Tell your neighbors and share on social media.” 

Everbridge’s Resident Connection provides verified mobile, landline and VoIP telephone records to use for emergency notifications; however, there is no complete database available. Additionally, those that chose to keep their information private in the old system will not be shared with the town. 
To help communicate the switch and to ensure the most complete database as possible, the town will initiate two Arlington alerts, on this schedule:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 11, 5 p.m.: Initiated from the existing system to all subscribers to inform them of the move, the upcoming confirmation message, and ways to create a profile on the new system.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 12, 5 p.m.: Initiated from the new system to confirm registration in it.
