At police 'Peace and Pumpkins' held: Decorate in solidarity

Peter J. Koutoujian, sheriff

UPDATED, Oct. 10: Chief Julie Flaherty reports that the department is the host for "Peace and Pumpkins" -- an event to decorate pumpkins that is part of this year's National Faith & Blue Weekend.

It was held Saturday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, outdoors at the St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church, 4 Appleton St.

The event, hosted in partnership with St. Athanasius The Great Greek Orthodox Church is part of National Faith & Blue Weekend, an initiative that aims to facilitate safer and stronger communities by engaging law enforcement officers and local residents through the connections of houses of worship.

Children will be provided a small pumpkin as well as googly eyes and paint to decorate their pumpkin. Arlington police cruisers and the newly wrapped-in-pink police cruiser will also be present for a touch-a-truck opportunity.

"We are grateful to the St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church for partnering with us for this event," Chief Flaherty said in an Oct. 6 news release. "Arlington is fortunate to have a strong and diverse faith community, and we look forward to participating in the Faith & Blue Weekend this year. Events like this help foster connections between our officers and residents, and the positive relationships that are created can go a long way in enhancing the safety and wellbeing of our community."

This event is free to attend, but registration is required to ensure enough pumpkins and decorating supplies are available. To register, click here >>

National Faith & Blue Weekend is a collaborative initiative that aims to build bridges and breaks down biases through activities and outreach among law enforcement professionals and the communities they serve. It is based on the premise that strong communities are built on mutual respect, trust and understanding. Law enforcement entities and faith-based groups are key pillars of a local community, and when they work together, neighborhoods thrive.

The effort is an expansion of the One Congregation One Precinct initiative (OneCOP), a program of MovementForward Inc., which is a bridge-building, solutions-focused human and civil-rights organization based in Atlanta. Its organizers represent every major national law enforcement group and faith tradition in the United States. The effort is sponsored by FirstNet with AT&T along with the Motorola Solutions Foundation and Wrap Technologies.
